The materials

Foundation: Strip Foundations.
Walls and roof: The Kingspan TEK Building System
Heating: Hot water - see interesting fact below. The tank from the hot water is also linked to a conventional Sedbuk 'A' rated boiler for the Winter months. The size & number of radiators will be less than normally indicated by the normal calculations.

The Background

Greenline Homes was formed by Roger Coates to build two new houses on previously developed land, parts of two very big back gardens. Long Riston is in the Holderness of East Yorkshire (an area of rich agricultural land, which was marshland until it was drained in the Middle Ages). It is located 6 miles from the coast, 8 miles from Hull and 6 miles from Beverley.

The Build

It was Roger's wish to put in tested technology for energy efficiency and some old fashioned virtues which are now pretty rare in new build construction. Using the Kingspan TEK Building System (Structural Insulated Panels - SIPS) with WHVHR was a good start. Rain water recovery in the form of a 4000 litre sunken tank takes all the roof water & returns it automatically to flush 3 toilets, serve the washing machine tap & garden taps. The overflow will go to a soakaway or the nearby surface water drain. At dry times the system automatically changes to mains water until such time as the stored levels rise.

Why SIP Construction?

SIP construction was an obvious choice given Roger's requirements for using tried and tested technology. Houses with the features that are included in these houses are usually self build and end up on Grand Designs; here we have houses that are suitable for people who want eco-living without all the hassle and stress of doing it themselves! These houses offer future proof living with modest energy and water bills - forever!
